Pre K at McGill Learning Center

At McGill Learning Center, our Pre K program is designed to support children ages 4 to 5 as they take their next steps in learning and community. We create a warm and nurturing atmosphere where young learners feel safe, valued, and excited to explore. Daily experiences include guided play, hands-on learning, arts and crafts, music, and movement. Each activity is thoughtfully chosen to promote cognitive growth, social interaction, early literacy, and a sense of independence.

What Makes Our Pre K Program Special

Our teachers are experienced in early childhood education and skilled at meeting each child exactly where they are. They observe interests and strengths, then build lessons that encourage curiosity and confidence. Through small group time, circle discussions, and outdoor play, children develop important social and language skills—sharing ideas, listening to friends, and asking thoughtful questions.

One core focus is preparing children for kindergarten readiness. We emphasize basic literacy like letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and beginning writing, alongside early math skills such as counting, sorting, and patterning. These are introduced through stories, games, puzzles, and learning centers, making discovery fun and relevant. While academics are important, we believe in a balanced approach. We weave in imaginative play, free exploration, and emotional learning, so children feel empowered to try new things and express themselves.

Our Pre K schedule includes family-style meals, daily Chapel time, and a peanut-free policy—all designed to create a wholesome environment. We partner with families every step of the way: through regular updates, parent-teacher conferences, and practical tips for supporting at-home learning. Children graduate from our Pre K program ready for kindergarten, confident in their abilities and excited for what comes next.

Enriching Learning Through Play

In our Pre K classroom, play is at the heart of everything we do. We know children learn best when they’re actively engaged, so we create learning centers filled with materials that spark curiosity and creativity. Whether it’s building with blocks, experimenting with water and sand, or exploring art tools, every child can follow their interest and develop important skills at their own pace.

Teachers plan hands-on projects that connect core concepts like early math and literacy to real-world experiences. For example, during a pretend grocery store, children practice counting, comparing sizes, and identifying letters on signage. Or in our nature corner, they observe how plants grow and describe their findings. These activities promote problem-solving, observation, teamwork, and language development—all without feeling like structured lessons.

Our Pre K day follows a consistent schedule that gives children a sense of stability and supports learning. Here is a glimpse of a typical day:

  • 7:00 am – 8:30 am: Arrival and free-play time; socializing and easing into the day with gentle guidance.

Partnering with Families in Pre K

At McGill Learning Center, our partnership with families is central to our Pre K philosophy. We believe children thrive when home and school share consistent values, expectations, and routines. That’s why we go out of our way to communicate openly and authentically with parents, seeking to form strong bonds based on trust and shared goals.

Each Pre K family receives weekly updates that include classroom highlights, photos of children’s work, and ideas to reinforce learning at home. These messages are practical and easy to act on—like encouraging a child to practice writing their name or counting items during grocery shopping. We aim not to overwhelm, but to empower families with meaningful ways to support their child’s growth.

Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year. These are a time to celebrate progress, discuss any concerns, and set goals together. Our team shares growth in areas like early reading, math skills, social behavior, and emotional regulation. We ask parents about what they see at home, and together we plan strategies to build on strengths and address any challenges. This collaborative approach ensures each child feels understood and supported both inside and outside the classroom.

We also invite families to engage in community events such as Open House, Chapel celebrations, holiday gatherings, and parent workshops. These create space for meaningful connections—between families, teachers, and the greater McGill community. As a faith-based center linked to McGill Baptist Church, these moments reinforce our shared values and sense of belonging. Over our 50 years of service, we’ve seen how such ties contribute to children’s well-being—and to parents’ peace of mind.

Finally, our center has a peanut-free policy and serves family-style meals, ensuring each child enjoys a safe, inclusive lunch experience. We welcome conversations about allergies, dietary needs, or cultural preferences, and we adjust menus with care. Our aim is that every family feels respected, heard, and confident that their child is cared for with love and attention.

Through consistent communication, shared celebration, and community involvement, our Pre K program becomes a true partnership. Parents tell us they appreciate feeling truly known, and children respond with increased confidence, curiosity, and joy. That’s the heart of our mission: a nurturing place to grow—together.
