Screen Time for Ages 0–5: Evidence-Based Limits & Better Alternatives
September 25, 2025Sending your child to daycare or preschool is an exciting milestone, but it also comes with the daily challenge of making sure they have everything they need. As educators and caregivers who have supported families for decades, we know firsthand how much smoother the day runs when children arrive well-prepared. The right items not only keep children comfortable but also help them fully engage in learning, play, and friendships.
Every family approaches packing differently, but what often surprises parents is how much those needs shift with the seasons. At Mcgill Learning center, where we serve children from 6 weeks to 5 years old, we gently remind parents that a thoughtfully packed bag is a gift of security and preparedness for a child. When children know they have what they need—whether a cozy sweater on a chilly morning or sunscreen for outdoor play—they can focus their energy on exploring, learning, and growing.
Everyday Essentials: What Children Need Year-Round
Before diving into seasonal needs, it’s important to establish the core items that should be packed every day, no matter the time of year. At the foundation is a change of clothes—children grow quickly, and spills, art projects, and outdoor adventures mean a backup set is invaluable. We recommend labeling every item of clothing to ensure it makes its way back home.
Diapers, wipes, and creams are, of course, crucial for infants and toddlers. Preschoolers who are toilet training benefit from extra underwear and pull-ups in their bag. A water bottle that your child can manage independently is another staple, keeping them hydrated throughout the day. Comfort items, such as a small blanket or soft toy, can help ease transitions during naptime or when a child feels homesick.
These everyday items serve as the foundation of your child’s bag, and from there, seasonal adjustments ensure they are prepared for all weather conditions and activities.
Spring: Fresh Starts and Unpredictable Weather
Spring brings fresh energy, budding trees, and longer days—but also unpredictable weather. Children in this season need flexibility in their wardrobe, as mornings may start brisk while afternoons grow warm.
We recommend packing lightweight jackets or sweaters that can be easily layered. Rain gear is another must, including a raincoat and boots, since puddles are irresistible for little feet. A second pair of socks is wise to keep in their cubby, as wet feet can quickly lead to discomfort. For sunnier days, a hat provides protection during outdoor play, especially since children spend more time outside as the weather improves.
Spring is also allergy season, and for children with sensitivities, tissues and any required allergy medications should be provided with clear instructions. Having these essentials ready helps ensure that children can enjoy the beauty of the season without unnecessary discomfort.
Summer: Staying Cool and Sun-Safe
Summer in a daycare or preschool setting means abundant outdoor play, water days, and opportunities to soak up the sunshine. To keep children comfortable and safe, their bags should prioritize sun protection and cool clothing.
Parents should pack sunscreen labeled with the child’s name, and reapplication instructions should be communicated to teachers. A broad-brimmed sun hat is another helpful addition, shielding both face and neck. For water activities, a bathing suit, towel, and water shoes help children participate without worry. We also encourage breathable, lightweight clothing and at least one extra set in case of spills or water play.
Hydration becomes especially critical in the summer. A sturdy water bottle, easy for your child to open and close, will support their well-being as they run, climb, and play outdoors. Summer is about freedom and exploration, and packing with these needs in mind ensures children can participate fully in the joys of the season.
Fall: Layers for Changing Temperatures
The arrival of fall brings a mix of warm afternoons and cool mornings. For families, this season calls for thoughtful layering. A jacket or hoodie that can be taken off easily is essential, as children often start the day bundled up but shed layers as the classroom warms.

Closed-toe shoes are especially important in fall, since playgrounds and outdoor spaces may be damp with dew or leaves. A light hat may be helpful for cooler mornings, but not as heavy as winter gear. Gloves are sometimes needed in late fall when the weather turns crisp, though they should be easy for children to manage on their own.
Fall also brings more opportunities for seasonal crafts and activities, many involving paints, glue, and outdoor materials. Having an extra outfit on hand becomes even more valuable during this time of year, ensuring children can fully immerse themselves in creative and messy learning experiences without concern.
Winter: Warmth and Comfort Above All
Winter demands the most preparation when packing for daycare or preschool. Cold weather requires multiple layers, and young children especially need help staying warm from head to toe.
Parents should provide a warm coat, hat, gloves, and boots each day. Mittens are often easier for children to manage than gloves, and waterproof boots keep little feet dry when playing outside. Snow pants may also be requested, depending on the amount of outdoor play in your area. Extra socks—ideally thick, warm ones—help avoid discomfort if feet become damp.
Indoors, children will still need a comfortable change of clothes in case of spills or accidents. Cozy sweaters and long pants keep them comfortable as they transition from outdoor play to classroom activities. Winter also tends to bring an increase in sniffles, so tissues and chapstick for chapped lips are thoughtful additions.
Preparedness in winter is not just about comfort but also about health. By keeping children well-dressed for the cold, families protect them from unnecessary colds and keep them free to enjoy the joys of the season—storytime by the window, holiday crafts, and snowy playground adventures.
A Final Word on Preparedness
Packing for daycare or preschool can feel like a small task, but in reality, it plays a meaningful role in how a child experiences their day. When children have what they need, they feel secure, and that sense of readiness frees them to focus on learning, exploring, and forming friendships.
At McGill Learning Center, we see the difference every day. A child who arrives with a cozy blanket for nap, boots for puddle jumping, or an extra sweater for a chilly afternoon is a child who can immerse themselves in the day’s opportunities with joy and confidence. Families, too, benefit from the peace of mind that comes with knowing their child is comfortable and cared for.
As you prepare your child’s bag each day, think of it as packing more than just “things.” You are sending your child with the tools to embrace their day—tools that say, “You are ready, you are cared for, and you belong.” With that assurance, children flourish, and their time in daycare or preschool becomes a nurturing foundation for a lifetime of growth.
